Snug Cove Canada to Royal Vancouver YC – Vancouver July 26th to July 27th 2008

We left Snug Harbor and the Union Steamship Marina and headed to Vancouver. Vancouver is a great city and reminded us a lot of San Francisco. It has the water, is a city with a history, and a bridge designed by the same architect that designed the Golden Gate Bridge. Alexus had contacted the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club located in Coal Harbor which is right downtown near the “West End” neighborhood of the city of Vancouver. We were fortunate that we stayed right in downtown Vancouver for $6.00 per day. (for electricity) We tied up at the Yacht Club and registered. We felt very fortunate to stay at the guest dock as the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club has a 30 year waiting list to get a permanent slip. We found out that this one of the days they were having the “Celebration of Light” in English Bay around the point from where we were docked. Celebration of Light is a fireworks show where nations compete. The previous weekend had been China and this weekend was USA. After walking the area near us and having a great lunch at a place called the Garlic Bistro that had wonderful roasted garlic, we decided to take one of these hop on hop off tours of the city. It is a great way to see a big city and figure where you want to go spend more time. We returned to the boat and Alexus convinced me that it would be fun to go and anchor out and watch the fireworks. We had never done that at Kaboom in San Francisco, but we could give it a shot here in Vancouver. She needed to convince me because at Kaboom there are too many drunken boaters, a crowd of boats and we needed to untie the boat, anchor out and then return an re-dock the boat at the yacht club. Needless to say, the fireworks display was fantastic and the boaters were not too badly behaved. The next day we continued our tour of the city of Vancouver by using the hop on hop off bus and spent time in Granville, which is a tourist type section and we decided to be tourists.
